LETTERS, Page 8THE HOSTAGE AGONY
It is an international disgrace for an American Marine to be
shown hanging from a rope (NATION, Aug. 14). What is it going to
take for the Bush Administration to realize that military action
is the only way to stop terrorism in the Middle East? In 1981, at
the end of the Iran hostage crisis, Ronald Reagan promised "swift
and effective retribution" in response to any future terrorist acts
against Americans. I believe Lieut. Colonel William Higgins and
other Marines would be alive today if our political leaders had
practiced what they preached.
Roy Harrison Northcutt

The U.S. cannot be held accountable for the safety of its
citizens who choose to live in a precarious land. Those who go on
official U.S. business or of their own accord are well aware of the
possibility of abduction. If they are kidnaped, America can attempt
to rescue them, but terrorists should not be allowed to hold our
entire Government hostage.
Ronald F. Gallop
Wallington, N.J.
The Israelis are the only ones with the guts to fight
terrorism. The leaders of other nations sit by while their citizens
are kidnaped, but Israel is fighting fire with fire. By abducting
Sheik Obeid, this brave country gave the murderous Arabs a dose of
their own medicine.
